Reaper was, to me an ex Logic on Windows user, like a comfy armchair that I could configure and setup exactly how I want. I've briefly demo'd other DAWs like Ableton and Digital Performer, but just didn't gel at all with them. Now that's both stunning advice from a company that literally earns a living from selling this stuff, and also was spot on. Go home with your new stuff, download Reaper and use it on a trial until you feel guilty enough to pay for it. Anyway, point is, we got to software, and whilst they had all the different DAWs on the shelf, they instantly all just went, "yeah don't buy these. We went through audio interfaces, midi keyboards vs digital pianos etc etc, and spent ages with me helping me choose monitors (got to compare everything, including ATC - and on their advice ended up with JBL 305p mkII, and been totally happy). When I was getting back into music a couple of years ago, after a 15+ year hiatus, I went to my local pro store, and had a chat with the guys there, including the owner, about what I should be getting for bedroom production studio etc.
